The three caravels, which were initially part of the EXPO 92 world exhibition in Seville, served numerous purposes in the years that followed. Among other things, they were used for the filming of the epic historical drama film 1492 - The Conquest of Paradise, before the Andalusian government acquired them as part of the Andalucía 92 project. Today they are permanently located in the Muelle de las Carabelas and are the centerpiece of a comprehensive exhibition that delves deep into the history of seafaring and the era of the Discoveries.
The museum not only includes the three famous ships, but also a modern information center that brings visitors closer to the history of Columbus' expedition. A particular highlight is the recreation of a medieval district, which authentically depicts the life and atmosphere of the 15th century. Here, visitors can experience how people lived, worked and traveled at the time of Columbus.
Another highlight of the museum is the “Isla del Encuentro” (Island of Encounter), a recreated version of the island of Guanahani, which Columbus first set foot on on October 12, 1492 and christened San Salvador. On this island, the indigenous culture of the inhabitants of Guanahani is impressively presented, including their way of life, clothing and tools. This exhibition offers a respectful insight into the world Columbus found and highlights the importance of this encounter in world history.
The Muelle de las Carabelas is an absolute must for anyone with a passion for seafaring and the history of discovery. The opportunity to go on board the faithful replicas of the ships, marvel at the detailed reconstructions and feel the historical atmosphere makes this place an unforgettable experience. The exhibition not only offers a journey into the past, but also a deep insight into the challenges and adventures that the discovery of the New World entailed.
