Stages of the route

Stage 1: Ride through the southern Axarquía

The Axarquía, an enchanting region in the province of Málaga, owes its name to the Arabic word "Ash-sharquía", which means "the east". This name refers to its location to the east of Málaga and is reminiscent of the time of Moorish rule. During the reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, the Moors retreated to this remote, mountainous region, which they had dominated for over 800 years.

The Axarquía boasts a breathtaking variety of landscapes, ranging from the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra de Tejeda to the dramatic cliffs of the Mediterranean. Fertile plains, criss-crossed by olive groves and citrus plantations, alternate with deep, narrow valleys where nature shows its untouched side.

The typical whitewashed villages of Andalusia, the so-called Pueblos Blancos, can be found on the mountain slopes of this region. These picturesque villages, whose houses are often decorated with colorful flowers, preserve a lively tradition and culture that is reflected in numerous festivals, religious celebrations and local customs.

Visit to the Balcón de la Axarquía in Comares

Comares is a place where time seems to stand still and yet it is full of life and history. If you want to experience the authentic atmosphere of Andalusia, you will find a real jewel of the Axarquía here. The picturesque village is often referred to as the "Balcony of the Costa del Sol". This title is by no means an exaggeration, as the village, situated at an altitude of around 700 meters, offers spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding hills, valleys and down to the Mediterranean coast. The origins of Comares date back to Phoenician and Roman times, but the Moorish era was particularly influential. The Moors recognized the strategic location of the town and built a fortress here, the remains of which can still be seen today. Typical of Comares are the whitewashed houses that nestle picturesquely against the steep mountain slopes and are surrounded by blooming bougainvilleas and geraniums.

Stage 2: Drive on the N340 coastal road from Algarrobo-Costa to Nerja

The coastal section of the N340 from Algarrobo-Costa to Nerja is one of the most picturesque routes along the Costa del Sol. Once the main route along the southern Spanish coast, this historic road offers a unique blend of scenic beauty, charming coastal towns and an authentic taste of Andalusia's Mediterranean region.

The journey begins in Algarrobo-Costa, a tranquil coastal town known for its long beaches and traditional fishing. Here you can enjoy the typical Andalusian beach atmosphere, which is characterized by chiringuitos (beach bars) and cosy promenades. The route then continues along the coast, winding gently between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of the Axarquía behind it.

The section near Torrox-Costa is particularly impressive. Here, the N340 passes the Torrox lighthouse, a popular vantage point from which you can see the coast in all its glory. Torrox itself boasts the "best climate in Europe", which is reflected in the lush vegetation and numerous tropical fruits grown in the area.

The further east you drive, the more spectacular the landscape becomes. The road offers breathtaking views of the azure blue sea just a few meters away, as well as the rugged cliffs, some of which plunge dramatically into the sea. This section of the N340 is lined with numerous small bays and beaches, which are often only accessible via narrow paths and convey a feeling of seclusion away from the tourist hotspots.

Visit to Nerja and the Balcón de Europa

Nerja is one of the most outstanding coastal towns on the Costa del Sol and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Andalusia. At the heart of the town is the famous "Balcón de Europa", an impressive viewing platform built on the remains of an old coastal fortification. This site was inaugurated by King Alfonso XII in 1885 and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire coastline. The platform is about 60 meters above sea level and offers an unforgettable view of the majestic cliffs and hidden coves that reveal the true beauty of Nerja.

The palm-lined promenade in front of the "Balcón de Europa" is another attraction that enchants with its picturesque atmosphere. Just a few steps away are the charming alleyways of the old town, where traditional restaurants, ice cream parlors, cafés and street vendors can be found. Here you can discover a variety of Andalusian products and enjoy the culinary delights of the region.

Stage 3: Ride and circumnavigation of the natural attraction Cerro Gordo

The coastal stretch of the N340 from Nerja to the natural site of Cerro Gordo is one of the most spectacular routes on the Costa del Sol. This drive offers an impressive combination of picturesque landscapes, dramatic coastal cliffs and hidden coves that make up the charm of the eastern Axarquía.

A highlight of the route is the section that passes through the Maro area. Here you will find the "Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo" nature reserve, an area of exceptional natural beauty. The steep cliffs, some of which drop several hundred meters vertically into the sea, are covered in lush vegetation and provide a habitat for numerous animal species. The protected bays and beaches, such as Playa de Maro, are considered real gems and are popular with nature lovers and divers alike.

The N340 continues along the coast, always accompanied by the majestic backdrop of the Sierra de Almijara. The route to the natural site of Cerro Gordo is a journey through one of Spain's most unspoiled coastal regions. Cerro Gordo itself marks the transition from the province of Málaga to the province of Granada and offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the entire Costa del Sol. From the viewpoint on Cerro Gordo, you have a sweeping view over the Mediterranean, the rugged cliffs and the deeply indented bays.

Stage 4: Drive to the mountain village of Frigiliana with a short sightseeing tour

Frigiliana is a picturesque village in the province of Málaga, located around six kilometers north of Nerja in the Axarquía. It is considered one of the most beautiful white villages (pueblos blancos) in Andalusia and is known for its well-preserved Moorish architecture, winding streets and spectacular location in the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara. After the "Reconquista", the reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, the village became one of the last retreats for the Moors, which is reflected in its unique architecture and cultural heritage. The old town, also known as "Barribarto", is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets between white houses. Many of these paths are steep and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. For the sightseeing, the tour guide stays with the motorcycles for safety reasons. Helmets and clothing can therefore remain on the bike.

Route extensions: Trip along the Sierras de Tejeda Natural Park, Almijara and Alhama

The mountain road that winds from Frigiliana via Cómpeta and Sedella to Vélez-Málaga offers one of the most spectacular drives through the eastern Axarquía and runs along the edge of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. This area is known for its wild and rugged mountain ranges, which provide an impressive backdrop for this ride. There are always breathtaking views of the coast and the deep blue Mediterranean in the background.

Cómpeta is the first major village on the route. This charming village, often referred to as the "Cornisa de la Costa del Sol" (cornice of the Costa del Sol), is famous for its sweet muscatel wine and lively art scene. Further along the route we reach Sedella, a smaller and quieter village nestled deep in the mountains. Sedella is less touristy than Cómpeta, but offers an authentic insight into rural Andalusian life. Nearby is the Pico de la Maroma, the highest peak (2,068m) in the Sierra Tejeda. There are many caves and ibexes are the most striking representatives of the fauna.

The stage leads to Vélez-Málaga, the capital of the Axarquía. After the winding roads through the mountains, the landscape opens up again and offers views of the fertile plains and the coastal region. Vélez-Málaga is a lively city with a rich history that is reflected in its architecture and culture.

Stage 5: Drive along the N340/A7 coastal road from Torre de Mar to Málaga

The ride begins in Torre del Mar, a popular seaside resort known for its extensive sandy beaches and lively promenade. From here, the N340 heads west, always along the coast and accompanied by magnificent views of the Mediterranean, until we reach the coastal smalltown of Benajarafe. To avoid the less attractive section around the town of Rincón de la Victoria, we change to the A7 coastal highway. Shortly before Málaga, we return to the N340, which runs through the eastern suburbs of the city and gradually opens up views of Málaga's impressive skyline. It leads right into the heart of the city, past important sights such as the Gibralfaro fortress, the lively port and the famous La Malagueta beach.
